Multilingual Support at Expo 2025 Osaka: QR Translator at the Electric Power Pavilion ‘Eggs of Possibilities’

The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC) is providing multilingual support in 37 languages at its pavilion, Electric Power Pavilion: Eggs of Possibilities, at the 2025 World Expo Osaka, using QR Translator®, a tool developed and operated by PIJIN Co., Ltd. This initiative is ensuring that visitors from around the world receive accurate exhibit information in their own languages, and has been made possible through the collaboration of three organizations, including the Osaka University language club GGC.
Background
Now underway, the Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai is expected to attract approximately 28.2 million visitors during its run. Among them, about 12% (3.5 million) are expected to come from overseas. While there is no official breakdown by country or region, over 160 countries are participating officially, bringing a wide array of international guests.
While English can serve as a base language for many visitors, it is estimated that only 2 to 3 billion people globally speak or understand English as a native, second, or learned language. Given the global population of 8 billion, this means only about one in three people can be expected to understand signage effectively if it is available only in English.
To address this, the pavilion has introduced a custom version of QR Translator supporting 37 languages. It enables users to access information in their device’s default language by scanning a single QR code. Notably, the translations are not AI-generated—they have been translated and supervised by native speakers affiliated with Osaka University’s GGC club, ensuring both accuracy and clarity. As a result, visitors who are not proficient in English can understand the Electric Power Pavilion’s exhibits and information in their native or most familiar language. With support for 37 languages, this solution is expected to cover over 99% of international visitors.
About QR Translator
QR Translator is a multilingual display service developed and provided by PIJIN. It uses QR codes that detect the language setting of the user’s device (smartphone) and automatically display translations and audio readings in the user’s preferred language.
For users, it functions like a standard QR code and requires no special app. For service providers, it eliminates the need to create separate printed materials in multiple languages. If a translation error is found, it can be corrected via the cloud without reprinting the QR code, and the updates are reflected in both the text and audio.
